Yeah the joke gets kind of old near the end. I did find it funny though to start with as I watch quite a few self defense vids, picking up ideas and techniques, and this reminded me of a few of them. :) Often martial arts practitioners get caught up in the technical aspects of the katas/moves etc. In reality in the streets as he was pointing out, the last thing you are probably thinking about is "wrist control". lol. It's a common mistake by some instructors (the poorer ones). They find a technique they judge as being pretty cool, then bore their audience to tears with scenarios where they use the same move over an over again. Many instructors are also kind of obsessed with showing how great their martial art would conceptually work on the street, but the reality is, mixed-martial arts and proper situational awareness are more likely to work on the street, than any one particular martial art. This is not to say that Boxing / Krav Maga / Sambo / Wrestling / Karate / Judo / Ju-jitsu / Muay Thai / Tae Kwon Do etc. are useless, far from it, but none of them will make you a fully rounded fighter, you have to combine the best techniques from all of them. In a way the video makes you think, hey what if I was a great martial artist, and someone whips out a gun, what then? How do I stay alive? The answer is usually, let the mugger take your wallet, it's not worth dying over. That's what most reasonable people would do. If he is really crazy and going to kill you, well then you better do something... Without being highly trained, I've probably avoided many situations on the street than I care to think about, some could have ended badly, but knowing when to walk away, and how to conduct yourself can often be a good thing. I feel there is no shame in avoiding a fight over something trivial and walking away. Verbal abuse etc. may annoy, but you have to be able to let it slide, or you can play into an attackers hands. |

The lesson I got from it was 'don't talk about what you have'. |
